Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Learning and growth

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Learning strategies, sharing experience, the present perfect and follow-up questions.
Classroom tasks: Share a learning experience; run a learning-strategy interview; summarise a partner's points
Homework and unit checks: Write a learning reflection; submit the interview recording; grammar and narration quiz in week 3

MODULE 02 · People and society

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Interviews, relationships, communities, relative clauses and supporting an opinion.
Classroom tasks: Design a profile interview; discuss a community issue; support a view with evidence
Homework and unit checks: Write a profile piece; complete the themed reading; reading and opinion writing in week 6

MODULE 03 · Media and information

Weeks 7–10

Teaching content: News essentials, fact and opinion, the passive and reported information.
Classroom tasks: Compare two reports; summarise a news item; separate the stance of a headline from the body text
Homework and unit checks: Take news listening notes; write a summary; mid-term test in week 8 and an information-relay task in week 10

MODULE 04 · Topic project

Weeks 11–14

Teaching content: Source reading, group discussion, a viewpoint text and a five-minute presentation.
Classroom tasks: Research a topic in groups; peer-review each other's writing; give a five-minute presentation with questions
Homework and unit checks: Keep a research log; draft and revise an opinion article; prepare the closing presentation

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: language knowledge and narrating experience.
Week 6: medium-length reading and an opinion paragraph.
Week 8, mid-term: listening, reading, applied grammar and short writing.
Week 10: news summary and relaying information.
Week 14, final: a three-part opinion article, a five-minute presentation and live questions.
