Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Complete beginners. No prior requirement.
Course materials: French Foundations A1.1, pronunciation audio, situation cards and a basic workbook.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Bonjour, enchanté

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: The alphabet and sounds, greetings, introductions, subject pronouns and être.
Classroom tasks: Spell out names; introduce yourself; exchange basic personal details
Homework and unit checks: Shadow the pronunciation audio; record an introduction; pronunciation and greetings speaking test in week 3

MODULE 02 · Me and my life

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Countries, jobs, numbers, dates, gender, basic articles and avoir.
Classroom tasks: Fill in a personal profile; introduce your family; listen for numbers and dates
Homework and unit checks: Write a profile card; vocabulary practice; basic listening, reading and sentence-pattern quiz in week 6

MODULE 03 · A day in the city

Weeks 7–9

Teaching content: Places, transport, directions, regular verbs and common prepositions.
Classroom tasks: Use a map to ask for directions; explain your route to class; read signs in public places
Homework and unit checks: Write out a route; prepare a directions dialogue; situational speaking test on directions in week 9

MODULE 04 · A first French task

Weeks 10–12

Teaching content: Ordering in a café, shopping, pronunciation and a situational assessment.
Classroom tasks: Order from a menu; ask prices in a shop; give a short spoken presentation
Homework and unit checks: Consolidation review; record an ordering dialogue; prepare the closing situational task

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: pronunciation speaking test.
Week 6: listening, reading and language knowledge quiz.
Week 9: speaking test on asking for directions.
Week 12: self-introduction, an ordering or shopping dialogue, and basic reading and writing tasks.
