Course outline

Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of FR-A1.1, or command of basic pronunciation, greetings, numbers and common present-tense expressions.
Course materials: French Foundations A1.2, everyday listening materials and a writing workbook.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Family and routine

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Possessives, reflexive verbs, telling time and daily habits.
Classroom tasks: Introduce your family; compare daily routines; interview a partner about their day
Homework and unit checks: Write a family introduction; record your routine; speaking and grammar quiz in week 3

MODULE 02 · Home and city

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Describing a home, location, the imperative, questions and directions.
Classroom tasks: Describe a room; give directions from a map; find suitable accommodation
Homework and unit checks: Describe a home; practise routes; listening and situational exam in week 6

MODULE 03 · Food and shopping

Weeks 7–9

Teaching content: Partitive articles, quantity, preferences, comparison and service encounters.
Classroom tasks: Draw up a shopping list; order a meal; compare products
Homework and unit checks: Complete the menu task; record a shopping dialogue; service-scene speaking test in week 9

MODULE 04 · Weekend plans

Weeks 10–12

Teaching content: The near future, invitations, responses, planning and an integrated speaking task.
Classroom tasks: Issue an invitation; agree a time; put together a weekend plan
Homework and unit checks: Write an invitation message; write up the plan; prepare the closing presentation

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: family and daily-routine expression.
Week 6: listening and speaking on accommodation and routes.
Week 9: speaking test on ordering and shopping.
Week 12: a weekend plan, an invitation message and integrated listening and reading.
