Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of the A1 stage, or placement at CEFR A1.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Stories from the past

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: The perfect tense, an introduction to the imperfect, narration and follow-up questions.
Classroom tasks: Tell the story of a trip or of growing up; retell a story from pictures
Homework and unit checks: Write about an experience; submit a speaking recording; narrative check in week 3

MODULE 02 · Travel and services

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Accommodation, transport, requests for help, complaints and confirmation.
Classroom tasks: Check into a hotel; make enquiries at a station; deal with a problem in a service situation
Homework and unit checks: Write a service email; prepare a dialogue; situational listening and speaking exam in week 6

MODULE 03 · Health and choices

Weeks 7–10

Teaching content: Health, obligation, advice, pronouns, comparison and giving reasons.
Classroom tasks: Book a medical appointment; discuss lifestyle; choose between options
Homework and unit checks: Write health advice; mid-term quiz in week 8 and an opinion task in week 10

MODULE 04 · French city project

Weeks 11–14

Teaching content: Research, itinerary design, email writing and a group presentation.
Classroom tasks: Research a French-speaking city; build an itinerary; respond to questions
Homework and unit checks: Summarise your sources; write up the itinerary; revise the project report

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: narrating an experience.
Week 6: travel and services situational exam.
Week 8, mid-term: listening, reading and language knowledge.
Week 10: giving health advice.
Week 14: the city project, an email and an oral presentation.
