Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of FR-A2, or placement at CEFR A2.
Course materials: Intermediate French B1, a social and cultural reading pack, and a formal writing task book.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Study and work

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Education, experience, CVs, motivation, relative pronouns and formal expression.
Classroom tasks: Simulate an interview; revise a section of a CV; explain a study plan
Homework and unit checks: Write a paragraph of a motivation letter; formal expression exam in week 4

MODULE 02 · Media and culture

Weeks 5–8

Teaching content: Reports, reviews, relaying information, pronouns and comparing viewpoints.
Classroom tasks: Compare cultural reviews; summarise a news item; recommend a book, film or album
Homework and unit checks: Write a short review; summarise a listening text; mid-term exam in week 8

MODULE 03 · Society and environment

Weeks 9–12

Teaching content: Cause, result, condition, discussion and a short debate.
Classroom tasks: Analyse a problem; propose solutions; take part in a structured debate
Homework and unit checks: Write an opinion article; debate and writing check in week 12

MODULE 04 · Topic outcome project

Weeks 13–16

Teaching content: Multiple texts, an interview, a written report and an oral presentation.
Classroom tasks: Choose and research a topic; interview; peer-review reports; present orally
Homework and unit checks: Annotate sources; produce a first and final draft of the report

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: formal email or statement of motivation.
Week 8, mid-term: integrated listening, reading and writing exam.
Week 12: a short debate and an opinion article.
Week 16: research report, oral presentation and questions.
