Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of the beginners' course, or command of kana, basic greetings and simple copula sentences.
Course materials: Integrated Japanese N5, a basic kanji list, listening materials and unit exercises.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Life and action

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Verb groups and forms, existence, invitations and daily activities.
Classroom tasks: Describe a day; look for a missing item; invite a classmate
Homework and unit checks: Verb practice; record your routine; language knowledge quiz in week 3

MODULE 02 · Description and comparison

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Adjectives, preferences, ability, comparison, people and places.
Classroom tasks: Compare cities; talk about an activity you enjoy; describe a person
Homework and unit checks: Write a description; speaking and reading check in week 6

MODULE 03 · Requests and permission

Weeks 7–10

Teaching content: The て-form, requests, permission, prohibition and actions in progress.
Classroom tasks: Explain campus rules; ask for help; role-play a service situation
Homework and unit checks: Te-form practice; mid-term exam in week 8 and a situational speaking test in week 10

MODULE 04 · Elementary integrated task

Weeks 11–14

Teaching content: Short reading, listening, travel planning and a stage assessment.
Classroom tasks: Plan a trip; read a notice; give a group introduction
Homework and unit checks: Write a travel plan; keep a listening log; final revision

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: verb conjugation.
Week 6: descriptive expression.
Week 8, mid-term: listening, reading and language knowledge.
Week 10: speaking test on requests and permission.
Week 14: a travel plan, short reading and writing, and an integrated N5-stage assessment.
