Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of the beginners' course, or command of Hangul, basic greetings and simple copula sentences.
Course materials: Elementary Korean 1, pronunciation consolidation audio, everyday conversation and unit exercises.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · What I do every day

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Present tense, common verbs, time, frequency and routines.
Classroom tasks: Interview about routines; describe a week; complete a schedule information gap
Homework and unit checks: Write about your routine; shadowing; verb and speaking quiz in week 3

MODULE 02 · Eating and shopping

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Quantity, prices, ordering, requests and choices.
Classroom tasks: Order from a menu; ask prices; compare products
Homework and unit checks: Write a shopping list; record a dialogue; situational speaking test in week 6

MODULE 03 · City and travel

Weeks 7–9

Teaching content: Location, transport, purpose, directions and itinerary planning.
Classroom tasks: Ask for directions from a map; plan a route; explain the purpose of a trip
Homework and unit checks: Write out a route; listening and route task in week 9

MODULE 04 · Introducing my life

Weeks 10–12

Teaching content: Preferences, ability, linked sentences, short writing and speaking.
Classroom tasks: Talk about your interests; describe campus life; take questions from peers
Homework and unit checks: Draft a talk about your life; prepare the closing presentation

Course outline

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: everyday expression.
Week 6: shopping and ordering scenarios.
Week 9: listening and speaking task on getting around.
Week 12: a short piece about daily life, a personal presentation and integrated listening and reading.
