Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of KR-1, or placement at an equivalent elementary level.
Course materials: Elementary Korean 2, graded listening and reading materials, and an everyday writing task book.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Experiences and memories

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Past tense, experience, sequencing and describing photographs.
Classroom tasks: Tell a story from pictures; interview about a trip; sequence events
Homework and unit checks: Write about an experience; narrative speaking test in week 3

MODULE 02 · Plans and invitations

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Future, intention, invitations, arrangements and travel plans.
Classroom tasks: Issue an invitation; agree a time; build a group itinerary
Homework and unit checks: Write an invitation; planning writing and dialogue check in week 6

MODULE 03 · Health and problem-solving

Weeks 7–10

Teaching content: Reasons, advice, obligation, symptoms and service situations.
Classroom tasks: A medical consultation; explain a problem; propose a solution
Homework and unit checks: Write health advice; mid-term exam in week 8 and a situational speaking test in week 10

MODULE 04 · Elementary integrated project

Weeks 11–14

Teaching content: Short listening and reading, personal writing, presentation and assessment.
Classroom tasks: Themed reading; a personal story; a group presentation
Homework and unit checks: First draft of the project; review the stage papers

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: narrating an experience.
Week 6: invitation and planning task.
Week 8, mid-term: listening, reading and grammar.
Week 10: problem-solving speaking test.
Week 14: a personal piece, a themed presentation and an integrated elementary assessment.
