Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Views and arguments

Weeks 1–3

Teaching content: Claims, reasons, examples, complex links, agreement, challenge and clarification.
Classroom tasks: Take apart the argument in a short text; hold a position discussion; practise responding to objections
Homework and unit checks: Write an argument paragraph; submit the discussion recording; argument-structure test in week 3

MODULE 02 · Problems and solutions

Weeks 4–6

Teaching content: Urban, environmental and technology topics, causes, comparisons and recommendations.
Classroom tasks: Analyse a case problem; compare three options; run a decision meeting
Homework and unit checks: Write up a proposal; describe data; written problem-solving task in week 6

MODULE 03 · Cross-cultural communication

Weeks 7–10

Teaching content: Cultural differences, tone, politeness, repairing misunderstanding and case discussion.
Classroom tasks: Work through a cross-cultural conflict case; rewrite an inappropriate message; simulate a negotiation
Homework and unit checks: Write a case reflection; rewrite an email; mid-term test in week 8 and a role simulation in week 10

MODULE 04 · Integrated research task

Weeks 11–14

Teaching content: Multiple sources, an interview, a written report and a group presentation.
Classroom tasks: Define a research question; carry out interviews; reach conclusions and present them
Homework and unit checks: Annotate sources; summarise interviews; draft and revise the report

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 3: identifying arguments and stating a position.
Week 6: problem analysis and a recommendation report.
Week 8, mid-term: integrated multi-skill test.
Week 10: cross-cultural case negotiation.
Week 14, final: a multi-source written report, a group presentation and questions.
