Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of FR-B1, or placement at a stable CEFR B1.
Course materials: Advanced French B2, critical reading materials and a formal expression task pack.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Register and precision

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Formal and informal register, cohesion, paraphrase and language editing.
Classroom tasks: Rewrite a text for different readers; edit faulty sentences; explain a concept
Homework and unit checks: Compile a set of rewritten texts; language-editing exam in week 4

MODULE 02 · Analysis and argument

Weeks 5–8

Teaching content: Argument structure, evaluating evidence, concession, rebuttal and critical reading.
Classroom tasks: Take apart an editorial; rank the evidence; write a response
Homework and unit checks: Write an argumentative essay; mid-term reading and writing exam in week 8

MODULE 03 · Public-issue discussion

Weeks 9–12

Teaching content: Education, technology and culture through round-table discussion and synthesis.
Classroom tasks: Chair a discussion; synthesise views from several sources; work towards consensus
Homework and unit checks: Write a synthesis summary; discussion and synthesis writing in week 12

MODULE 04 · Research and presentation

Weeks 13–16

Teaching content: Source review, argumentative writing, formal speaking and live questions.
Classroom tasks: Choose a research topic; rehearse the talk; take part in peer review
Homework and unit checks: Revise the research article and the speech across several drafts

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: register and language editing.
Week 8, mid-term: critical reading and writing.
Week 12: round-table discussion and a synthesis summary.
Week 16: argumentative essay, formal presentation and live questions.
