Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of JP-N5, or placement at roughly JLPT N5 overall.
Course materials: Japanese Upper Beginner N4, a grammar-function book, graded reading and listening exercises.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Experience and change

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Plain forms, experience, changes of state, sequence and sentence links.
Classroom tasks: Talk about growing up; explain a change; retell an event
Homework and unit checks: Write about an experience; language knowledge and narrative speaking test in week 4

MODULE 02 · Plans and advice

Weeks 5–8

Teaching content: Intention, plans, conditions, recommendations and problem-solving dialogue.
Classroom tasks: Plan an activity; give advice; negotiate between alternatives
Homework and unit checks: Write a proposal; mid-term listening, reading and writing exam in week 8

MODULE 03 · Information and reporting

Weeks 9–12

Teaching content: Hearsay, inference, reasons, short news and relaying information.
Classroom tasks: Summarise a news item; relay what a partner said; explain the basis for a judgement
Homework and unit checks: Take listening notes; information-relay task in week 12

MODULE 04 · Daily-life project

Weeks 13–16

Teaching content: A survey, short writing, group reporting and N4-stage practice.
Classroom tasks: Carry out a survey on everyday life; organise the results; present orally
Homework and unit checks: Write the survey report; review the practice papers

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: narrating an experience.
Week 8, mid-term: integrated exam.
Week 12: listening and relaying information.
Week 16: the survey project, an oral report and an N4-stage mock.
