Course outline

Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of KR-2, or placement at roughly TOPIK level 2 overall.
Course materials: Intermediate Korean 1, a media and culture listening and reading pack, and chart and paragraph writing exercises.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Study and work

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Experience, goals, reported speech, formal situations and relaying information.
Classroom tasks: Share a plan; simulate an interview; relay what a partner said
Homework and unit checks: Write about your goals; relaying and formal expression exam in week 4

MODULE 02 · Media and culture

Weeks 5–8

Teaching content: Film, online media, cultural topics, comparison and responding to views.
Classroom tasks: Review a work; compare cultural practices; summarise a news item
Homework and unit checks: Write a short review; mid-term listening, reading and writing exam in week 8

MODULE 03 · Life in society

Weeks 9–12

Teaching content: Public rules, environment, community, causes and solutions.
Classroom tasks: Analyse a community problem; make recommendations; hold a topic discussion
Homework and unit checks: Write an opinion paragraph; discussion and writing check in week 12

MODULE 04 · Topic survey project

Weeks 13–16

Teaching content: Questionnaires, source reading, charts, a report and presentation.
Classroom tasks: Run a survey; organise the charts; write the report; present
Homework and unit checks: First and final draft of the survey report

Course outline

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: formal expression and relaying information.
Week 8, mid-term: integrated exam.
Week 12: discussion of a social issue and paragraph writing.
Week 16: survey report, chart commentary and oral presentation.
