Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of JP-N4, or placement at roughly JLPT N4 overall.
Course materials: Integrated Japanese N3, a long-sentence reading book, news listening and themed writing materials.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Long sentences and texts

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Modification, connectors, reference and identifying paragraph focus.
Classroom tasks: Break sentences into sense units; reorder paragraphs; extract the main point
Homework and unit checks: Analyse long sentences; reading-structure exam in week 4

MODULE 02 · Listening and reading in society

Weeks 5–9

Teaching content: Notices, interviews, short news, note-taking and summary.
Classroom tasks: Listen to an interview; read a notice; summarise orally
Homework and unit checks: Keep a listening log; mid-term listening and reading exam in week 9

MODULE 03 · Views and interaction

Weeks 10–13

Teaching content: Agreement, disagreement, tact, reasons and topic discussion.
Classroom tasks: Discuss a position; respond to objections; chair a group exchange
Homework and unit checks: Write a short opinion piece; discussion speaking test in week 13

MODULE 04 · Intermediate outcome task

Weeks 14–18

Teaching content: Theme reading, a short report, oral presentation and N3 assessment.
Classroom tasks: Choose and research a topic; peer-review reports; present formally
Homework and unit checks: First and final draft of the report; review the practice papers

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: long sentences and text-level reading.
Week 9, mid-term: listening, reading and language knowledge.
Week 13: topic discussion.
Week 18: a short report, an oral presentation and an integrated N3-stage mock.
