Entry level and teaching arrangements

Entry level: Completion of KR-3, or placement at roughly TOPIK level 3 overall.
Course materials: Intermediate Korean 2, news and interview materials, and a formal communication and argumentative writing task pack.

Course outline

Four connected learning modules

The outline is organized by progression of ability. Teachers adjust the density of practice to how a class is doing, while stage goals and core content stay the same.

MODULE 01 · Register and relationships

Weeks 1–4

Teaching content: Honorifics, written and spoken style, formal requests and context.
Classroom tasks: Rewrite across speech levels; simulate a formal request; analyse a case of misjudged politeness
Homework and unit checks: Rewrite across speech levels; formal communication exam in week 4

MODULE 02 · Information analysis

Weeks 5–8

Teaching content: News, interviews, charts, summaries and integrating multiple sources.
Classroom tasks: Compare two reports; extract the data; write a synthesis summary
Homework and unit checks: Write a news summary; mid-term listening, reading and writing exam in week 8

MODULE 03 · Views and argument

Weeks 9–12

Teaching content: Claims, reasons, examples, concession and strategies for advancing discussion.
Classroom tasks: Take apart an argument; hold a round-table discussion; respond to objections
Homework and unit checks: Write an opinion article; discussion and writing check in week 12

MODULE 04 · Integrated outcome project

Weeks 13–16

Teaching content: Topic research, a written report, formal presentation and live questions.
Classroom tasks: Choose and research a topic; peer-review the report; rehearse the talk
Homework and unit checks: Revise the report and the speech across several drafts

Assessment schedule

Assessment is spread across the term rather than saved for the end, so both teacher and learner can see progress while there is still time to act on it.

Week 4: speech levels and formal requests.
Week 8, mid-term: information analysis.
Week 12: an opinion article and a structured discussion.
Week 16: research report, formal presentation and questions.
